Engine Decarbonisation

Lower fuel consumption,
higher power!

What Is Engine Decarbonisation

Decarbonisation is a professional cleaning process that helps restore your engine closer to proper operation — quickly and safely, depending on the method chosen.

Carbon build-up is a genuine enemy of every engine. It also poses a serious threat to diesel particulate filters (DPF), the intake system and the fuel injectors. The main problem is that deposits gradually clog the intake and exhaust valves, injector nozzles, combustion chamber, exhaust system and catalytic converter, causing loss of engine power, reduced compression, irregular ignition, engine knocking and poor starting.

These deposits reduce engine performance and increase fuel consumption.

Decarbonisation Is Like Resetting Your Engine

Today, decarbonisation has become a key tool in the fight against emissions and for cleaner air. Carbon, the enemy of engines and diesel particulate filters, builds up in various parts of the vehicle, reducing both performance and lifespan.

Fortunately, there is an effective and affordable method for removing carbon deposits without dismantling the engine. This method is quick and reasonably priced, and it allows carbon to be removed from all affected components of the car.

Why Decarbonisation Matters

Engine decarbonisation isn’t just a service procedure — it’s a way to maximise your car’s performance, reduce running costs and ensure long-term reliability.

Decarbonisation makes sense especially if:

  • you notice reduced power, or the car “doesn’t drive like it used to,”
  • fuel consumption is increasing,
  • the engine runs irregularly, knocks, or starts poorly,
  • you notice smoke (often with diesel engines),
  • you’re dealing with a clogged DPF, EGR or intake,
  • you want preventive maintenance (typical for city driving and short trips).

Types of Decarbonisation — We Choose the Right Method for Your Car

Every engine is different. That’s why we offer three main methods, and in practice we often combine them for the best results.

Chemical Decarbonisation (BG Products)

We use professional BG Products equipment and treatments that dissolve deposits in components such as:

  • combustion chambers and valves,
  • intake manifold,
  • EGR,
  • DPF/FAP,
  • injectors and fuel system.

Advantages of chemical decarbonisation:

  • fast application,
  • suitable both for prevention and for resolving an existing problem,
  • BG products can create a protective layer (preventing re-build-up of deposits).

Hydrogen Decarbonisation (H2) — Eco-Friendly Cleaning Without Chemicals

Hydrogen decarbonisation is a modern method in which a gas mixture (hydrogen/oxygen) created through controlled electrolysis is fed into the intake. While the warmed-up engine is running, it helps loosen and burn off deposits on the pistons, valves, injectors, and the parts between the combustion chamber and the exhaust.

How hydrogen decarbonisation works:

  • System preparation — connecting the equipment and feeding H2 into the intake
  • Cleaning activation — the process runs while the engine is running
  • Inspection and testing — verifying the effect and recommending next steps

When it’s suitable:

  • you want fast, eco-friendly cleaning,
  • you have mild to moderate build-up,
  • you want prevention without dismantling.

Mechanical (Manual) Decarbonisation — The Most Thorough Treatment

Mechanical decarbonisation is physical cleaning of components (e.g. intake, EGR) in cases of significant build-up.

How it works:

  • removal of the affected components (most often the intake, EGR),
  • manual cleaning with tools/brushes,
  • inspection and reinstallation.

Suitable when:

  • power is significantly reduced,
    fuel consumption is considerably higher,
  • the car emits smoke,
  • the intake/EGR isn’t working correctly,
  • chemical or hydrogen cleaning is no longer enough.

Decarbonisation with BG Products

BG and Petro Canada products stand out for their composition and manufacturing process. BG’s decarbonisation and additive products are a market leader and are used across almost every part of the vehicle.

They are used by professionals for issues such as reduced power, high emissions, high fuel consumption, irregular engine running or poor starting. BG products are also used by everyday drivers for prevention against costly repairs, to boost performance, reduce emissions and address high fuel consumption.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Is decarbonisation safe for the engine?

Yes, when carried out correctly and with the right method chosen for the situation, it’s safe. The key is selecting the right type (chemical / hydrogen / mechanical) based on the engine’s condition.

Hydrogen and chemical decarbonisation are generally carried out without disassembly. Mechanical decarbonisation may require removing certain components (e.g. intake, EGR).

It depends on your driving style. For short trips and city driving, prevention makes a lot of sense. Cleaning the intake is often recommended about once a year.

Yes, we offer DPF/FAP cleaning using BG technology without disassembly. In cases of extreme build-up, however, further diagnostics may be necessary.

Often, yes — especially if the issue was caused by deposits. For long-standing faults (such as sensor failures, turbo issues, or leaks), the underlying cause also needs to be addressed.
